Abstract

It appears reasonable to assume that the legitimate functions in the field of education of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on the one hand, and the mechanical engineering departments of our Universities and Technical Colleges on the other, are for the Institution to decide what shall be taught and for the engineering departments to provide the physical means (i.e. buildings, staff and equipment) and the educational know‐how (i.e. teaching methods) for giving young engineers the kind of knowledge the Institution requires.

Abstract

How many individuals, committees and authorities who quote from the imposing array of statistics in the Robbins Report, in support of their demands for increases in the provision for technological education, and how many of those at whom these demands are directed, are fully aware of the Alice‐in‐Wonderland method adopted by the Robbins Committee in their attempt to estimate the future demands for higher education?

Abstract

IN RECENT YEARS a number of textbooks on applied thermodynamics (of American origin or American‐inspired) have given considerable emphasis to a new and restricted definition of the word ‘heat’. The actual definition takes various forms. From some it appears that heat must now be considered solely as energy in transit due to a temperature gradient and is not a form of energy that can exist inside a body. From others, that heat must be considered as an interaction between systems at different temperatures, the direction of the interaction being purely conventional or metaphorical.

Abstract

Lasting differences between the ‘extract’ and the ‘inject’ schools of thought on liberal content suggest that some more general principle is needed. The author finds in wartime Army education a principle which gives coherence, balance, and some guidance on allocating time.

Abstract

A recent statement by the Rt. Hon. Joseph Godber, that he is ‘greatly concerned with the small number of qualified training officers’, has led me to question whether the reason for this is that many are sharing my experiences.

Abstract

The success and adaptability of healthcare organizations will depend more and more on their ability to draw on the capabilities of their people. Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, a rural Ontario hospital, has evolved an organization and culture based on shared leadership and decision‐making responsibility. Today this extends to front‐line teams. This did not come about, however, without continuous effort. Successful transition takes preparation, guidance, much thought, commitment and patience.
